Yes, we take pride in our golf course, rated by Golf Digest® in 1999 as the 5th best new private course in the country, and, for the second time in a row Golf Digest® rated Steelwood the 2nd best overall course in the state of Alabama, second only to Shoal Creek. We are equally pleased with our world-class Clubhouse, the Sporting Club, the Fishing Club, the diversity of our neighborhoods, and the quality of our amenities and infrastructure. Above all else, The Stewart Lodge at Steelwood is most special because of its caring and professional staff. However, The Stewart Lodge at Steelwood is so much more than the sum of these remarkable amenities.
Some of these amenities include:
Golf - Designed by former U.S. Open Champion Jerry Pate. With no two fairways alike and with four sets of tees on each hole, the course offers versatility appealing to players of all levels. Tee times are seldom a problem, and ladies and couples are encouraged to play when they want. A putting area and driving range are included.
Tennis - Located at the Sporting Club, the lighted hydro-clay courts are available day or night for our clients' enjoyment.
Fishing - Bass and bream fishing on our own 400-acre lake is unparalleled. The staff caters to your every desire and is always available via radio. The Club-provided boats are electric powered (no private boats are allowed) and are ready when you arrive, stocked with your tackle, hand towels, and your favorite beverages. Exceptional saltwater fishing is available in the local bays and the Gulf of Mexico; just minutes away by private car, or fly directly there from our lake by floatplane.
Hunting - Steelwood hunts are enjoyed by experienced hunters and novices alike, providing an unforgettable experience for clients, or a day to network with business associates and friends who enjoy the excitement of wing shooting. As you might expect in this part of the country, hunting is an integral part of the Steelwood experience. The season, from October through February, offers ample opportunities to bag your limit. Daily quail hunting and scheduled pheasant hunts are both offered. Challenge your shooting skills in our sporting clays area. Whether you are a competitive shooter or novice, we can offer you a challenging day of shooting with guns and ammo available. The safety of our members and staff is always our top priority.
Nature Trails - There are literally miles of secure trails for morning walks and runs. Or spend your day exploring our nature trails. The trails wind through dense pine woods that border our lake. Several ecosystems can be explored. This is a good place to view quail, deer, fish, and an occasional river otter. Blue jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, raccoons, and gray squirrels are just some of our year-round residents too. Colorful resident breeding birds include the Orchard Oriole, Eastern Towhee, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, and Eastern Bluebird. Musical calls are heard from the Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse, Pine Warbler, and the secretive Wood Thrush. Adding to theses sounds are five species of woodpeckers and flickers, as well as the calls of herons and egrets. The Lake hosts Purple Gallinules, a rare and beautiful breeding resident. Last fall brought seven species of ducks to the lake, including the beautiful Goldeneyes. Three Bald Eagles and two Ospreys accompanied them, and stayed for months. Detailed information on the bird life of Steelwood is available for interested clients.
Fitness Center -
Massage - Close your eyes and experience the true meaning of relaxation. Let one of our professional massage therapists gently massage you into divine euphoria. Massage is one of the best-known remedies for stress, giving you more energy. Massages are performed in The Sporting Club.
The Best Amenity - Perhaps, most importantly, our clients find that the slower pace and serenity of The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood engenders such simple and meaningful pleasures as lounging on the porch rocker all day with a good book, gathering around an evening bonfire with colleagues, and friends, stargazing late into the night, or waking up early to watch the mist rise over the lake.
Its natural beauty and the solitude you find here create for us an obligation; an obligation to craft a special place that can be shared by others while maintaining and nurturing the grandeur of this remarkable site. A place to reconnect friends, business associates, families, and extended families with one another and with nature in a quiet, contemplative way. The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood is a community in which the pace is slower and daily life is simpler; yet retaining a certain sophistication here that is neither self-conscious nor overwrought.
